WordPress Dictionary

Like most content management systems in website development agencies, WordPress has its own language. But what is WordPress anyway?

It was first created as blogging software and was essentially used in a personal way, reflecting the opinions and interests of each owner. Today, blogs are important tools in the world of news, business, politics and entertainment, as most people search for information online.

WordPress is a CMS (Content Management System) which, by definition, is a “system used to organise and facilitate the creation of content”. In a web agency, it’s common to use CMSs as the basis for websites. More recently, as the role of WordPress has expanded, it has become one of the tools favoured by companies to create their own websites.

WordPress terminology

  1. Publishing Content

The term “Word” in WordPress refers to the words used to compose posts. To make publishing easier, WordPress provides an authoring tool complete with modules that can be moved via drag and drop. This feature meets the needs of blog authors and agencies that manage client content. The QuickPress Dashboard module makes it easy to quickly write and publish posts. It’s really easy and there’s no excuse not to use it.

  1. Media Management

Another essential component of a modern website is images, sounds and videos, also known as media. WordPress simplifies the insertion of media directly into articles through an easy-to-use method, with an efficient Media Manager for uploading and organising files.

  1. Categories and Tags

In addition to categories and keywords, there is another important tool: tags. Tags can be assigned to each publication and act as an additional, non-hierarchical navigation tool. Categories and tags are part of the WordPress taxonomy system. For more detailed organisation, users can create custom taxonomies, allowing specific identification of publications, pages or custom post types.

  1. Meta-data

Post categories and tags are elements of metadata. Meta-data refers to the information associated with each post, including the author’s name, the date of the post, the categories, the titles and subtitles, etc. Meta-data also includes customised fields where you can assign specific keywords that correspond to the posts.

  1. Plugins and Themes

The WordPress ecosystem of plugins and themes allows for almost unlimited customisation. With literally thousands of plugins available, you can add functionalities ranging from SEO, security, e-commerce to advanced digital marketing tools.

Themes, on the other hand, allow the design to be personalised, identified with the brand and guaranteeing the desired appearance for the website.

  1. Updates and Security

Keeping WordPress up to date is essential for site security and online performance. The WordPress team regularly releases updates to improve functionality and fix vulnerabilities. There are also specific plugins to strengthen security, such as firewalls and malware protection.

  1. Elementor

Elementor is a WordPress plugin that lets you create pages intuitively and visually, without the need for programming skills. Elementor’s drag-and-drop interface offers a wide range of pre-built widgets and templates that make it easy to design responsive and personalised websites. It can also seamlessly integrate other plugins and themes with great flexibility and efficiency when building complex layouts. Elementor is ideal for designers and companies looking to develop high-quality websites quickly and efficiently.

Technologies like WordPress make the tasks of creating and maintaining a website much easier. We could even say that they are the best friends of web designers and web developers!
